The South Carolina National Guard (SCNG) is a component of the United States National Guard under the jurisdiction of both the U.S. Department of Defense and the state of South Carolina. It serves primarily as a reserve military force, ready to be mobilized by the President or the Governor in response to domestic emergencies, natural disasters, and national defense needs. The SCNG is organized with an Army and an Air National Guard component and includes more than 8,500 soldiers and airmen. Its mission is to protect the state and nation, supporting civil authorities during emergencies, and providing troops for war or homeland defense when called upon. The SCNG operates training facilities throughout the state, and its units participate in regular exercises and training programs to maintain readiness and proficiency.
