The Heart Flag of Ethiopia, also known as the "Ye'gegn Megbis Abyssinia," was used as the national flag from 1996 to 2009. This design is a modification of the previous Ethiopian flag, featuring three horizontal stripes of green, yellow, and red. The unique element in this version is the addition of a large, stylized depiction of a heart within the central stripe, symbolizing unity and love for the nation. The colors have their own historical significance: green represents hope and justice, yellow signifies truth, and red stands for sacrifice and courage. However, following a governmental decision in 2009, it was replaced by the current flag of Ethiopia.
